The North Face of the Matterhorn witnessed a great, fast ascent yesterday at the hands of 23-year-old Patrick Aufdenblatten and 26-year-old Michi Lerjen-Demjen, who climbed the face in 7 hours and 14 minutes via the route established by Walter Bonatti alone and in winter during his extraordinary and historical ordeal from 18 to 22 February 1965. The two Swiss alpinists form a formidable team and have climbed together from Yosemite to last year's repeat up the Z'Mutt Nose via the line established by ...

I've just spent two weeks shooting stills and video for the Gore Tex Experiace Tour - Norway. The 'tour' gave two winner of a competition, Julia Snihur and Helena Robinson, the chance to climb and explore Arctic Norway with Dave MacLeod. Dave MacLeod, Helena Robinson, Julia Snihur below Blamman We were based at Ersfjorden (or as I like to call it Erik's Fjord) just 15min drive from Norway's northern city of Tromso. Tromso reminds me of a little of Inverness, its population is comparable, it's in the far

Steaming up hill I am a selfish man, but I believe in community. I am a lazy man but believe in accomplishment, so like alotta folk I swing both ways. So the other week I had blisters and thought it stupid to make them worse by running a 100km mountain race, so I decided to be good by being at a refreshment station on the 55km race, and thus accruing some ‘Brownee points’ with that fictitious God that still lives in the back of my mind. Anyway there was a slight motive, as if I run in the race I ...

Report by Lindsay Griffin for the
:
On consecutive days French alpinists Yann Borgnet and Robin Revest linked three great north faces above the Glacier Noir in the Ecrins, the theme being to celebrate the achievements of one of the massif's most famous partnerships.
The Glacier Noir has a wild ambience: there are no huts, few people, no mobile phone reception, the routes are hard and committing, and the descents long and far from straightforward.
The south side of the...

I'm looking through the door in the basement of a hotel where I'm lying, with 4 other men, in a radon bath heated by the geothermal springs of Mt Damavand. Stood in the doorway is an overweight Iranian taxi driver in white baggy white Y fronts with a big rubber tube in his hand. Even after only a few days in Iran we were getting rapidly used to these contrasts but only a few hours ago it had been -25℃ and blowing about 40km/h as we clipped into our skis, 100m below the summit of Mt Damavand, the highest

I've been able to escape this past 5 days to the Alps and was hoping against hope that somehow I could get a route done to restore a bit of sanity having missed out on Scotland this season. Luck was on my side turning up trumps with the weather - grand beau temps, partners Steve Su and John Bracey, and a generous host in Zoe. The route was one I've been wanting to do ever since Nick Bullock and Andy Houseman repeated it free a few years ago - The West face couloir on the Plan. The only thing that didn't go
