Lochnagar

Setting off from Ballater it was a cold, clear and frosty morning. By the Col beside Meikle Pap it had clouded over but it was good to see the dusting of fresh snow above. The cloud hung around the upper half of the cliff. Sad to see the ice pitch at the start of Parallel A is no longer complete. Over on West gully the first pitch remains but on closer inspection it may prove fragile and partially detached. Walking back down the track to Glen Muick I met a local snowboarder with plans for The Black Spout.


Lochnagar debris day.

Looking up to the area between Red Spout and Central Buttress in the Corrie of Lochnagar on Saturday morning. The fresh avalanche debris is either from yesterday afternoon or early today. A prominent crown wall is visible to the right of the top of the obvious trangular buttress. Many gullies have fresh debris below them; particularly Douglas Gibson and Raeburns. Surprisingly nothing below the Black Spout. A good view directly into West Gully on the other side of the corrie. The lower ice pitch still ...


A few more "tricks" for moving fast on ice
