Climbing and the Olympics: Will Climbing Lose its Soul?

Image from Google About a month ago, before I went on unplanned hiatus from writing this blog, I read a very interesting commentary at Kairn.com on the Olympics and climbing. There has been a consistent push in recent years for the inclusion of competition climbing in the Olympics, perhaps in part because the potential resulting higher profile could bring bigger sponsors on board for events such as the World Cup. Here are some thoughts translated from the French, originally authored by Jean Pierre Banville: " Elleva y ...

Explorers Club Follow-Up: Clarification On Yesterday's Story

Yesterday I posted another story in the ongoing saga of the internal disputes that are taking place inside the Explorers Club , the 108 year old institution that has been at the forefront of exploration and adventure since its founding. In the story I quoted a New York Post article which stated that EC member Josh Bernstein , who also happens to be on the Club's Board of Directors, was "censured and fined" because he accepted tickets to the Club's annual Patron's Dinner from the event's sponsor, Rolex .

Explorers Club Follow-Up: Flag and Honors Committee Members

Image from Google Last week I posted a couple of stories about some strange rumblings coming out of the Explorers Club and an internal dispute that resulted in ten members of the prestigious Flag and Honors Committee either resigning or being dismissed, depending on which side of the story you believe. You can read both of my posts here and here . So who were these rebel committee members that resulted in the first mass resignation in the history of the century-old organization? Baruntse & Mera Peak Expedition 2011 Part 3

Image from Google The Amphu Lapcha A quick and cold fair well was given to Baruntse base camp as we got underway for Chukhung. This was expected to be a 12 hour day which would be a shock to the system after trekking for 6 hours at most on the walk in. Walking most of the way with Debbie and Gordon, we all doubted our ability to get over the Amphu Lapcha; however the prospect of failing wasn’t too great as the Amphu Lapcha was the only reasonable way out of the valley other than a helicopter… our time would come for ...

7 Summits For Alzheimer's Update: Next Up, Carstensz Pyramid

Image from Google Alan Arnette continues to check off mountains on his quest to climb the Seven Summits for Alzheimer's . Having already knocked off Mt. Vinson in Antarctica, Aconcagua in South America, Elbrus in Europe, Kilimanjaro in Africa, and of course Everest in Asia, Alan has now set his sights on Carstensz Pyrmid, the tallest mountain in Oceania. Carstensz stands 4884 meters (16,024 feet) in height and is seen as a bit more of a technical challenge than some of the other Seven Summits. Located in a remote region of
