Baruntse & Mera Peak Expedition 2011 Part 2

Image from Google Arriving at Baruntse Baruntse Base Camp The arrival at Baruntse was impressive one, as BC, the moraine, and the towering Southwest face of Baruntse opened out in front of us. This was our home for the next 10 days. During the rest of this day and the next, the first rest days we had had for 17 days, we got straight down to business. We only had a scheduled 10 days on the mountain so every day counted. The two days were spent organising piles and many barrels of food, equipment for high on the mountain, and

Kalymnos 2011 - Trip Report 3 (Odyssey and Symplegades)

Alright. After the team's first couple of days a rest day was in order. So we piled into the Upskill limousine and began our Kalymnos mega tour. The main port town Pothia, the impressive church and monastery of Saint Savaas, and the scenic township of Vathy were all ticked. In order to work up an appetite, we decided some swimming, snorkeling and cliff jumping was in order... The water was just as good as it looks here. I've got a mighty spring going in this photo. At our restaurant at Vathy which is an

A T-Shirt Only TdF Fans Can Appreciate

Image from Google Obviously I'm a big fan of the Tour de France , or I wouldn't write stage by stage recaps each day, nor pay for the All Access option so I can watch it where ever I am. Maybe that's why I got such a kick out of the t-shirts that are available from Stomach of Anger (Which is a 2010 Tour reference in and of itself). I'm particularly impressed with the shirt below, which is up for pre-order now and will ship after this year's Tour ends. It is a reference to Johnny Hoogerland, the Dutch rider who crashed into

Watch The Expedition Africa Adventure Race Online

Image from Google Back in early May, the Expedition Africa adventure race took place in South Africa. The 500km long event sent teams of four out into the bush on one of the most challenging course in AR this season. In the end, Team Merrell Adventure Addicts claimed victory after 63-hours of racing. They were shadowed throughout the race by a camera crew, and the video of their race is now available for fans of adventure racing everywhere. The video, which you'll find below, was produced by D4 Productions , a company that

Outside Profiles Miss Elizabeth Hawley

Image from Google In just a few short days, hundred of climbers will begin to descend on Kathmandu where they'll collect their gear, finish last minute preparations, and then depart for a variety of Himalayan peaks. Each of them will be focused on reaching their respective summits, often spending weeks toiling away on the mountain just to stand on top for a few minutes. But as Outside Magazine notes in their profile of Miss Elizabeth Hawley , the summit doesn't count until she says so. For those that don't know, Miss Hawley

Titanium bolts: The answer for Thailand climbing?

Image from Google Introduction: The Norwegians Let me relate a story real quick. A new multipitch route on Fire Wall (Tonsai, Phranang Peninsula) goes up with stainless expansion bolts. The very same bolts that are used throughout all of Europe and the States. One year later a team of two Norwegians go to repeat the route. The leader climbs the first 6b pitch without falling and establishes the belay at two bolts. Before bringing up his seconder, he clips the rope into the first bolt of the 7c pitch above. When the seconder
