(c) Lorenzo Belfrond To take a year out between school and Uni was a smart thing to do among those who could afford it. Indeed I suppose for those who could go to Uni it must have been great, I didn’t go to Uni, I went to work! I am not grumbling, I didn’t learn much at school and would’ve probably learnt nothing at Uni. Still the idea has always appealed to me, a time to pause before adulthood, a time to enjoy, a time to mature, a time to gird ones loins or grind ones loins etc. So at the tender age

Four of us are standing around, knee deep in the chilly northern Pacific Ocean, trying desperately to offset and numb the pain in our legs. We can barely feel the crushed rocks and shells under our feet. Salt is crusted on our faces and jerseys, we all look a dazed, squinting into the sun thats bathing the cove, as our bodies struggle to come back into balance. Were mumbling inanely, wrestling with our incoherent and tired thoughts, but happy to no longer be trapped in our internal monologue. We chatter

The Grey Corries The other day after baby group I went for a wee run. With the Experience Tour trip to Norway just over a week away I am needed to sharpen up and shed a pound or two quickly after having put in a few weeks of training. So after a 12 hour fast Claire dropped me off in Glen Nevis and I headed up over Meall Cumhann, across the empty Coire Giubhsachan and up that savage slope of Aonach Beag (via a wee scope about the crags of course). I was still feeling bouncy of leg after that but as I headed

Considering the subject matter of this blog, I'm sure that most of you are familiar with Greg Mortenson and his wildly popular book Three Cups of Tea . For those of you who don't know his story, Mortenson was climbing in the Karakoram a number of years back, and after getting lost there, he wandered into a remote village, where the people treated him kindly, offered aid, and got him back on his feet. He was so touched by their generosity, that he vowed to return the favor by building them a school. He ...

With the main event out of the way and having recovered from the shock of Mahde's saggy Y fronts (see previous post) we had plenty of time to see a bit of Iran. We awoke in Larijan, lazy day, had a bit of a soak in the radon bath and had a tea in the town. A few of the locals became a little interested in what we'd been up to. Disbelief strewn across their faces that anyone could summit Damavand in winter. Only digital photos from the summit proving to them where we'd been quickly followed by vigorous ...

On Saturday EJ and I returned from Helmcken Falls. Tim Emmett had to head out a day early due to slideshow obligations in the UK, but we all had at the climbing there for another few days. The stoke level is high! Tim wrapped in from the lip of the falls to see if the "ice" on the headwall was climbable. This year it isn't, mostly snow, but I've seen photos from years where it is. EJ and I bolted sideways for another 30 feet on the headwall before the spray pattern changed, and we had to bail before ...

My name is Eirik Finseth. I started skiing at the age of three. I wish I could say I remember my first turns, but that would be a lie. The thing I do remember though, is my mother telling me about the early days: As a child I was not the bravest, so I cried every time they tried to teach me how to ski. I especially remember her saying that she got funny looks from the other mothers. The kinda look that says: "Someone please call child support". At the end mom and dad got so tired of trying to teach me to

Drum-roll please... Ladies and Gentlemen, after many, many years of waiting, hoping, and praying, they are finally here... well almost. I am sat typing this message in a pair of TNF climbing jeans that I have been lucky enough to get my grubby little hands on, and I have to say, they are fu@ing sweet!!! A mix of thin blue denim and 2% elastane, perfectly baggy with seams in all the right places, these are hands down the best climbing pants I have used - no word of a lie. Now before you all rush out to ...

I know I said yesterday, the season was more or less over at Margalef, and a 9a FA at this point would sort of make this statement a lie... Fortunately for me, this ascent was made last week. Era Bella is a big spectacular rig and, according to Chris, it could be the best route at Margalef. Daila Ojeda jokingly says he did the route while warming up, but the truth is he "wasn't warming up for anything, it's just that there are no easy routes around so, I just went for it Dani Andrada style haha".
