New year full of promise, but empty purse, replete with woe. I want to do some good stuff this year, it doesn’t have to be earth shattering, but it either has to be magical, or majorly monstrous, but always memorial. Bearing this all in mind and the empty purse, one would at first think this is all impossible, but the first step was yesterday. Let me explain. Yesterday I had a little run, I mean little really, it was 5kms! I have been injured since last October, a bad tear in my calf, anyway I been ...

We hope everybody had a wonderful Christmas and didn't overindulge too much on sugar plums. We have lots of snow and some cold temperatures here in Talkeetna. Here is a video from a 1997 Cancer Survivors climb guided by AMS owners, Colby Coombs and Caitlin Palmer. The climb raised money to support a children's camp for kids with cancer. Half of the team were themselves cancer survivors and were climbing with family members and friends. Everybody made it to the summit. ...

One of the stories I've been following over the past few weeks has been reports of serious infighting going on at the Explorers Club , an organization that has been around for more than a hundred years and has counted such notable explorers as Neil Armstrong and Sir Edmund Hillary amongst its ranks. Today, a story appeared in the New York Post that gives us a further glimpse at what is going on behind closed doors at the venerable institution. You can read the Post article by clicking here , but in a ...

The Amphu Lapcha A quick and cold fair well was given to Baruntse base camp as we got underway for Chukhung. This was expected to be a 12 hour day which would be a shock to the system after trekking for 6 hours at most on the walk in. Walking most of the way with Debbie and Gordon, we all doubted our ability to get over the Amphu Lapcha; however the prospect of failing wasn’t too great as the Amphu Lapcha was the only reasonable way out of the valley other than a helicopter… our time would come for ...

In a previous post, I discussed my feelings about the transformation of climbing into a luxury sport, at least at a certain end of the socio-economic spectrum. I posted a Youtube Video of an ad made by Citibank that features Katie Brown and Alex Honnold. Here's the video: Given the dismal economic picture in the US right now and the fact that big American banks in particular have had a great deal to do with it, it was natural that the ad would spark a certain degree of controversy. A forum post on Mountain

If your beloved ski hill ran out of money and had no choice but to close, what would you do?
With time running out for majestic Shames Mountain in Northern BC, local skiers from Terrace, Prince Rupert, and Kitimat have decided to take matters into their own hands and buy the ski hill as a community co-operative.

Before I start my review of the Mountain Hardwear Jovian Jacket , I have a disclaimer that I must get out. I'm a big fan of Mountain Hardwear gear. I mean a BIG fan. I have several pieces of their gear in my closet, and it has always performed above and beyond my expectations when I've needed it most. I've always found their equipment to be well designed, incredibly durable, and a good value for the money. I've always appreciated the company's attention to detail and obvious connection with their core ...

Polartec has launched their second annual Made Possible Challenge , which will award a single college with $10,000 cash and some great Polartec gear. The company hopes to encourage a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts through its support of collegiate outdoor programs and clubs. Last year's winner was Appalachian State, which received 28,000 online votes in just a single week. The school used their $10,000 to create a scholarship fund that is helping to fund outdoor adventures for a number of students.
