Lonnie Dupre Returns To Denali This Winter

Image from Google The winter season will certainly be an interesting one this year. Not only are the Russians taking on K2 , but now ExWeb is reporting that Lonnie Dupre will return to Denali, where he hopes to make the first solo winter ascent of that mountain in January. This will be round 2 for Dupre and Denali, with the mountain winning their first bout last year. Last year, Dupre traveled to Alaska in the coldest and darkest portion of winter just to attempt to scale the 6193 meter (20,320 ft) peak at the most ...

Are Ice Tool Leashes As Archaic as Gaiters, Screamers and Third Tools? The picture above is the last one I could find in my photo collection where I have a leash on a tool--Norway 2005. This is another blog post inspired by a question from a reader. The question was roughly, "I was wondering your take on leashless climbing for beginners? I am a sorta old school ice climber that still uses leashes for those 4 days a year I manage to get out ice climbing. (father in washington state) I feel that I don't get

Gear Box: Core Lite Survival Tool From Adventure Medical Kits

Image from Google Adventure Medical Kits has a great reputation for producing a wide variety of excellent first aid kits for just about any outdoor activity. They've got a range of products for the hiker on an easy day trail all the way up to the mountaineer heading for Everest, with pretty much everything you need in between. Personally, I'm a big fan of their ultralight kits , which are perfect for backpackers and adventure racers. Recently AMK added a nifty little item to their catalog called the Core Lite, a survival

Camping food and/or Quick food for the road (climb with kids)

Image from Google I was running through my repertoire of easy meal options for climbing, hiking, traveling with kid etc., and thought I'd share my short list in hopes of getting some feedback (and an expanded selection) for quick and easy food options. Some caveats: Refrigeration can be a challenge (adds to the amount we carry) so I try to think of things that won't spoil quickly. Some of the options on my short list, however, probably require refrigeration. We use these for short day trips and/or the climbing gym. 1. ...

The Review Issue Way back in the day (mid-nineties) I was the primary equipment reviewer for RockIce magazine. I loved that job for three reasons: First, I could get whatever gear I was interested in sent to me. Second, I would get all of that category of gear sent to me; hundreds of climbing holds for example, or a massive pile of roughly 50L packs. Third, I could basically write whatever I wanted to about the gear, and did. Today I get paid by a few different companies to test products and develop ideas

The Saga of the Stove

It all started, I believe, when I decided to buy a twenty-pound propane cylinder to use for a Mr. Heater unit in the cabin and for cooking fuel while on this southwest tour. Back in October, I went to the Agway in New Paltz and they had only one unit left. I bought it, slightly upset at the price, which was something like $25. Unfilled. When I got the cylinder home, the first night I hooked it up to the Mr. Heater and could not make it work. Not a good omen. A few days later I called the company, assuming
