This past weekend, I was at Mesa Rim Climbing and Fitness Center in San Diego, CA for the PCI Clinic with Daniel Woods, Ethan Pringle and Angie Payne. What a roster! The participants were PSYCHED and the community showed tremendous support and energy. Daniel, Angie and Ethan did an amazing job instructing, once again demonstrating that the world's best climbers can also be world class instructors. "I was really impressed with all the instructors ability to articulate advanced forms of movement, complex ...

Aside from being great friends, this is a class act gathering of athletes who are all super stoked to work and climb with the community in Southern California. Canyoneering is the term given to an outdoor activity that involves hiking, climbing, and scrambling through narrow, twisting canyons. It is a popular outdoor pursuit in places like Zion , Bryce Canyon , and Canyonlands National Parks here in the U.S. It also happens to be the subject of a new article from National Geographic as well, with author and climber Mark Jenkins traveling to Australia to experience the Aussie version of the sport. 27-year old Paul Guschlbauer was the big surprise at this year's Red Bull X-Alps competition – a non-stop adventure race over 864 km for selected athletes. The challenge is to cross the Alps from East to West as quickly as possible travelling only by paraglider or by foot. After 14 days, thousands of people followed the close duel for second place between Arc'teryx athlete Guschlbauer and Romanian Toma Coconea in the live-stream. Since 2003, the X-Alps race takes place every two years and is known as one

While I've been mostly occupied with the Raid the North Extreme this week, another event was taking place in Europe that is definitely worth a mention as well. That's where the Red Bull X-Alps 2011 was taking place, which is a very unique race that is a demanding test of endurance, skill, and nerve as well. For those who haven't heard of it before, and I'm one of them, the X-Alps is an event that pits endurance athletes on a non-stop race through the Alps, starting in Salzburg, Austria and ending in ...

Buy this book: A great new resource for local sport climbing, thanks to Derek for his work. Yesterday I got out with my least-repressed friend, Mr. Tim Emmett, along with Mr. Slawinski and Mr. K.H., who does not want his name on the internet. We visited The Notch, another really good craig in Echo Canyon (and covered in Derek's Bow Valley Sport). The Notch looks across the wide canyon to the Lookout, where I've spent at least 10 days this spring. Both craigs are over an over an hour of walking from the ...
