Avalanche on Aonach Mor

Finally there was a break in the high winds which seem to have been battering Scotland over the past few weeks. I took the oppertunity to get up on to the summit of Aonach Mor. From the plateau I saw evidence of a large slab avalanche in Coire an Lochain. In this picture I have marked the crown wall (or what I could see) in the picture above in red. I estimated this to be over 200 metres long. There was plenty of debris right down to the loch. This avalanche probabley released sometime on Wednesday during

Climbing training tips based on YOUR level

Climbing is an incredibly complex sport. It's not like throwing a javelin. There are so many different factors that come into play and require training. Also, it's worth remembering that what one climber sees as improvement (or success) doesn't necessarily equal improvement for another. Someone might aspire towards pure gymnastic difficulty (grades) while someone else might value variety, or volume, or style, or the social aspect of climbing or just having fun. Usually it's a combination. In the case of

Tour 2011: The God of Thunder Roars!

Image from Google Today's stage in the Tour de France was not expected to bring many changes to the General Classification, as it featured only one big mountain climb in the middle of the course, with a long descent and a fairly flat run to the finish line, which was in Lourdes for the first time in more than 60 years. True to form, there were no changes in the standings of the GC, but there were still plenty of dramatics to be had. Early in the day a group of riders attempted a breakaway. That group included Jérémy Roy,

Hitting a Plateau

Image from Google Hi Steph! My name is Alex and I recently visited your website! Great advice that you have up there! I was just wondering if you could help me out with a little advice. I have been climbing for just about a year now and am finding myself hitting a Plateau. It has been getting pretty [...]

Strong wind and rain cleared

The Cairngorms have had a lot of mild wet weather recently but large snow fields still exists in and around the corries. The plateau has good conditions for ski touring

Light snowfall

Good snow cover remains on the plateau, which has become quite firm above 1000 metres. Looking across to Mheadhoin

Lochnagar Corrie

Today was the first morning there was ice on the puddles for several days. Walking into Lochnagar today it was difficult to believe it was only five days ago that we skied to the top from the Glen Muick car park. There is now very little snow low down though cover on the plateau looks good still. Parallel A is still complete. In the corrie the snow in the shade had a crust on it but in many places we were breaking through to deep granular snow below. We saw no one climbing today. The Black Spout. (On the

Todays profile site

Today's profile site shows there are still expansive (not digitally altered) areas of snow, especially on the plateau for the discerning snow enthusiast.

Busy day on Lochnagar

Looking towards Cuidhe Crom and Meikle Pap from the Glen Muick approach to Lochnagar. Still great cover from the valley. Higher up the wind began to blow again from the South-West transporting more snow into the corrie. Looking down the valley that leads to Glas-alt-Shiel on Loch Muick. Still heavy going on foot. Lots of people out today enjoying the full winter conditions.....climbing, walking, ski touring and snowshoeing. The Glen Muick car park was full today. Skiing round the edge of the corrie we met
