According to Fred Beckey in Cascade Alpine Guide, "Mount Stuart has been pronounced the single greatest mass of exposed granite in the United States and dominates the Central Washington Cascades." Jens Holsten recently added a direct variation to Gorillas in the Mist (5.11) up Stuart Peak. Holsten along with partners Mark Westman and Sol Wertkin added five pitches to the original Gorillas in the Mist route that he established last year with Wertkin and Blake Herrington. Gorillas in the Mist, on the West

Summer is an incredible time of year, as the snows recede into the high peaks, and the mountains become a playground where you can do anything you can dream up.

Better late than never, here is what should have been posted on Monday: This week, Russell Gordon, Chelsea Principio, and Steve Elmer talk about just another climbing day. Though all of us are capable of much harder grades, we stuck to the moderates and took it easy on a lazy Friday afternoon at the Playground. [...]

With shorter days and Thanksgiving just around the corner, stretch your legs and see the changing season on any of these small wanders. Huddart Hankering Just off I-280 in the tony burg of Woodside is Huddart Park, a 972-acre respite with quiet trails curving through canyons and among stately second-growth redwoods. Picnic spots, grassy meadows, and a playground are all part of the attraction, but on a cool-weather weekend you might just have the place to yourself. For a good 4.5-mile hike with modest ups

I'm really psyched to keep receiving photos of the Plywood Ice "Plice" that people are building around the world, really cool! I recently wrote an article for Climbing (out soon I think) about training for steep ice climbing; the gist of it the article is that climbing a lot of ice would be the best training, followed by some sort of wall (plice), followed by replicating the movements (which we can all do on the playground or with any brick wall out there) followed by weight room training. Ease it up and stretch it out on any of these Marin hikesall less than 4 miles. Good day North Bay. Bonus Sherpa: Ready Made Marin Rodeo Round Up: The Marin Headlands has more points of interest than an iPhone app, and one of the best ways to see them is via a 3.5-mile hike from Rodeo Beach to Point Bonita Lighthouse. The views just keep on coming as you cross Bird Island overlook, go in search of an old shipwreck, detour to the lighthouse, and pass one of Marins best barbecue spots. Lake Lolling: Go on a

I just finished running a four-day course on mountain movement. I'm pecking away at a book on the same subject, and I wanted to test some ideas I had on how to help people move better in the mountains. I had a good response to the course outline that I put up, and selected eight brave victimsto take the course, thanks! The overall goal of the course was to increase the participants ability to move well in non-technical mountain terrain. I have a lot of theories and years of experience teaching mountain ...

A Race Report from Adam Campbell Like most newcomers to Vancouver, I have always been amazed how the North Shore mountains rise out of the Pacific and form an imposing, yet spectacular wall behind Vancouver's downtown core of glass buildings. The (in)famous trails that scar the slopes of the peaks have gained an international reputation and have redefined what is possible on mountain bikes, with steep, gnarly trails and the mountains have become the playground of many an outdoor athlete across the seasons.

I have been up in the high country quite a bit recently and have been considering what it is that makes alpine bouldering different from bouldering in the lowlands or the gym. Clearly above all it is the magnificence of the surroundings, their relative inaccessibility and the presence of powerful natural forces, sublime even, that have created the playground upon which we climb. Other famous bouldering areas in the US such as Bishop, Hueco, etc., in the end lack this fundamental characteristic of an ...

I spent the weekend cheering/coaching my wife, Kim Csizmazia, and all the other athltes at the Canada Crossfit Regional Games, which are a sort of athletic torture festival. Athletes at the Regionals have already qualified through a "Sectional," and a top six result at the regionals will send them to the Games finals in California. The competition is fierce, the events nasty, and the effort level high. I wrote most of the following as notes on my phone during the event, so it's a bit rough, quick sort and
