More snow on the tops.

It was quite wild with poor visibility during showers. Fresh snow drifing behind rocks on a rather icy Aonach Mor Plateau. From what we could see there was a fair bit of fresh being deposited on high Easterly aspects.

A fleeting glimpse of Coire an Sneachda between blizzards. Poor visibility at times with a breakable crust underfoot. Snow showers from the North-West Snow drifting over Fiacaill Sneachda ridge

Walking Group Leader Assesment

Image from Google Over the last two days I have been working on a Walking Group Leader Assessment. I was assessing 7 candidates with Helen over 3 day, I worked on the first two. The group were demonstrating their ability to navigate groups around the upland environment, keep the group interested with their knowledge of the environment and also how to deal with emergency scenarios. We also went out night navigating so the group could show me that they can navigate in poor visibility and darkness. Well done to the 4 that ...

Big snow fall

A three metre avalanche probe. When pushed into the snow only about 10cm sticking out. There has been significant snowfall over the past couple of days, with the winds from the East or North-East. There was no snow on this westerly aspects a couple of days ago, now there is almost 3 metres of windslab. This is not particularly stable, especially where it is sitting on top of the old hard neve. Poor visibility over the last couple of days has meant that I have not seen any avalanches from this storm cycles,

ML Assessment Day Two

Image from Google It was the steep ground day today, and we headed out into the Mamores. Another typical Scottish Day, with snow, winds and poor visibility. Again we had to perform a few set pieces like abseiling over and edge, lowering someone over a drop, Making a T-axe belay, Snow Bollards, and more snowpack analysis. I was [...]

Another cold day

Poor visibility up high today. A thick surface hoar layer is developing in the calm and very cold conditions.

Poor visibility in the Cairngorms

Still very cold and snowpack weaknesses on many aspects. Facets are developing due to steep temperature gradients within the snowpack . This small cornice didn't take much persuasion before it collapsed The views were not so great today

A wild & windy Carneddau

Image from Google I took a drive down that A55 again today despite the decidedly ominous weather forecast from the Met Office. Parked up in Gerlan and did the walk into Cwm Llafar alongside the Afon Llafar ('Black Ladders' approach). I wasn't exactly sure quite what I was planning today due to the constant sideways rain, howling gale & poor visibility across the summits, but fancied a couple of hours solitude. On reaching the impressive crag of Llech Du, I hung a right and headed high into the upper cwm. I ended up ...

What a week with Kingsmill Bread

Hi Guys Its been a little while since the last blog and that's due to the amazing week that's just gone. Our friends from Allied bakeries were back in the Alps with some big plans. Mark and Steve both climbed with us last year and now they brought their city trader big bonus mate Tim with them for extra clout. Between us we had some big plans but the rather poor weather made everything a little tricky. Starting in Switzerland we hoped to climb the Weissmess, a classic 4000m peak as a warm up, unfortunately

Avalanche hunting

Poor visibility limited the opportunity to see if any avalanches had run in Coire Loch Kander off the steep gully terrain. It was probably just on the cool side for the loose snow avalanches to run. Photo taken from near the edge, off Carn an Tuirc
