Mountain Leader Training

Image from Google This week I was working for 4 days on a Mountain Leader Training. On Monday the group and I spent the day mainly inside covering areas of the syllabus which are covered best in a classroom. In the afternoon after the torrential rain had eased, we went outside and we introduced the group to the rope work which they will need to learn for their assessment. We covered the basics on the grounds of the centre so on Tuesday we were able to get cracking on with putting it into context and practicing lots of ...

Helping on an ML Training

Image from Google Today I was scheduled on to take a group from a Mountain Leader Training course to some steep ground to look at rope work in the ML context. Most of the group haven't used a rope in the hills so we had plenty to cover. We looked carefully at anchor selection, how to attach ourselves to them and safeguard others over different terrain. We also looked at confidence roping, lowering and abseiling. We did all of this up and around the PYG Track which leads up too Snowdon from Pen y Pass. Was a chilly and windy

Scottish Winter 2011

Image from Google Photos courtesy of Zac Poulton, James Morrison and Mark Scales Scottish winter kit So having just returned from my first Scottish winter, I thought now would be a good time to share the experience. It’s hard to know where to start, as packing my bags for the trip seems a lifetime ago. I guess a good place is in fact the packing. So having seen the kit list from AP, and confident I had most of the kit; I set about the challenge of packing all the kit into two bags. This went strangely to plan, and left me

MIA Preperation

Today I met up with Mike who I did my MIA training with in 2009. He has his assessment coming up so he asked me to head out with him for a couple of day to discuss and practice relevant content for the assessment. Today we looked purely at rope work. We covered stance management, looking after two client (his two boys), switching from parallel to series and other rope work tricks. We then went on and looked at rescues and more rope work techniques. Mike has been on several AMI refreshment courses which ...

Plas Y Brenin: Expedition Symposium

Well I have spent the weekend working at the Plas Y Brenin Expedition Symposium, which was a great priviledge to be asked to deliver the Intorduction to Bog Walling workshop. A reasonably tough challenge of trying to show all the additional skills as opposed to normal rock climbing that you need to scale a big wall like the Nose of El Capitan. Hopefully I managed to cover enough within the short time. Having heard some feedback, it really sounded like I managed to make the most of the 2 hours sessions and
