So I've been home from South Africa for nearly a week, and I haven't had much of a chance to share my experiences from while I was there. You'll definitely be hearing a lot more about my time in SA in the days ahead, as I will be writing a number of stories about what I did there. Of course, I visited Kruger National Park, one of the greatest places in the world to spot wild animals, and while we did go on game drives, I wasn't there to go on safari per se. In fact, I was actually there to learn how safari

Recently a discussion emerged on the interwebs about the possibility that Paul Robinson had renamed a Fred Nicole problem in Rocklands South Africa. Originally called Black Eagle, Paul had appeared to propose the new name "Bleagle" to reflect the new status of the problem, on which crucial holds had broken. Among the most vocal critics of this step was Jamie Emerson who asked hypothetically what exactly constituted a boulder problem and by association, who had the right to define and name it. Shortly ...

A Race Report from Adam Campbell Like most newcomers to Vancouver, I have always been amazed how the North Shore mountains rise out of the Pacific and form an imposing, yet spectacular wall behind Vancouver's downtown core of glass buildings. The (in)famous trails that scar the slopes of the peaks have gained an international reputation and have redefined what is possible on mountain bikes, with steep, gnarly trails and the mountains have become the playground of many an outdoor athlete across the seasons.

Jenn Fields, reporter for the Boulder paper, contacted me recently about the practice of sharing information about boulder problems via blogs, Facebook, etc. I have a lot of videos posted at this blog for this purpose. She also talked with Jon Glassberg , routesetter at the Spot and prolific video maker. The story was a good look into the changing landscape of media in climbing. I definitely think guidebooks have a permanent role in the climbing world but there is no question that, regardless of climbing

NB: This article used to live in the articles section of my old site. I’ve reposted it here since it was really popular. Note that it’s nearly ten years old now! Background Sport climbing is the branch of rock climbing involving routes protected by pre-placed anchor bolts. The explosion in popularity of sport climbing and organised competitions have prompted a significant rise in participation and standards in recent decades. The focus of this new discipline is the athletic and competitive aspects of

Today, I drove down to Bridge of Orchy and walked up to the base of Taxus(III) on Beinn an Dothaidh. I soloed up the route and ended up on the summit in a whiteout. From here I navigated SW and ended up below Creag Coire an Dothaidh below all the route. I then went up to the col and went upto Beinn Dorain (1076). I then went back to the col, back up to Beinn an Dothaidh (1004) and then onto spot height 993 where I litrally bumped into a group of 6. Visibility was down to about 30-40m. From here I dropped
