Image from Google Writing for Five Ten about his recent time spent in Kentuckys Red River Gorge1, Dave Graham unleashes another classic entry for the internet to enjoy: I will admit, as this is my second trip to this place, I am blown away by the quality of the rock, the natural nature of the way the routes flow. Five Kilometers of Climbing in Greenland

Image from Google A Swiss-Bavarian group of climbers established over 5000 meters of climbing in ten new routes in Southern Greenland this August on the island of Quvnerit. The group consisted of Caroline Morel, Andres Lietha, Michi Wyser, Tom Holzhauser, Michi Tresch and Toni Lamprecht. Southern Greenland offers the potential for many more first ascents; Lamprecht compared the rock quality with that of the Alps. Quvnerit Island is located at the very southern tip of Greenland and has recently seen a lot of attention from

Tolerating Tolerance

On Saturday morning Suzy and I headed to Belfast to meet up with Ricky and Ali. This was to be my second trip to the Mournes with the sole intention of climbing Tolerance. The forecast was good and with clear skies as we landed it looked promising. Unfortunately within ten minutes of arriving on Binnian it started to rain and I only managed 15 minutes on top rope before the friction vanished rapidly and the rain turned to snow, cue hasty retreat. Keeping the moves fresh in my head while Dale got ready for

Helicopter Crashes On Ama Dablam

Image from Google Both ExWeb and Alan Arnette are reporting that a helicopter crashed on Ama Dablam this weekend, killing the pilot and crew member on board at the time. The rescue vehicle was attempting to rescue two stranded Japanese climbers at the time. According to the reports, the aircraft was making a second trip to the mountain from Lukla when it suddenly, and dramatically, fell out of the sky. It is unclear at this time as to the cause of the crash, but ExWeb quotes local civil aviation authorities as saying they

My friend left her car with me for the month of July, while she sublet my place in Manhattan. She did it partly so her vehicle would get some exercise while she was away, but mostly as a gift to me, since I do not have one. I was a bit reluctant to accept the thing, partly because I couldn't help but feeling responsible for it's welfare, imagining some unforeseen accident not of my fault but damaging the car nonetheless. But mostly because I must have know in my heart that, though I said I'd use it only

Peak Self Loathing

I had high expectations for our second trip to the peak, especially since we had a bit more time. The outcome was way below my expectations unfortunately. After three days trying and resting I failed to complete Nemisis F8a+ down at the Cornice. Getting really close after some late beta changes and skipping the clip [...]

The Children of the Khumbu

Image from Google Regular readers of my expedition dispatches know that I find genuine satisfaction in interacting with the local people on a climb, especially the children. My first trek in the Solo Khumbu area of Nepal introduced me to some special people. On my second trip, I was forever changed. By my seventh trip, it was home. I am not sure I can put a finger on it but the Khumbu kids have a uniqueness to them unmatched in my travels. They smile easily, welcome interaction and have a laugh that makes you laugh along -

Retouching The Void With Simon Yates

Here's another great opportunity to go trekking with a climbing legend. It seems that Simon Yates, of Touching the Void fame, is leading a trek back to Siula Grande, the mountain that made his, and Joe Simpson's story famous. U.K. adventure travel company World Expeditions has put together a 19-day trekking expedition along the Huayhuash Circuit which will be guided by Simon himself. Along with the usual highlights of this trek, which includes Inca ruins, a visit to Huaraz and Lima, as well as 13-days of

Dylan Johnson Attempts Latok 1 in Pakistan

Image from Google North Ridge of Latok 1, Pakistan A story by Dylan Johnson Despite 30 years of expeditions by many of the world’s best alpinists, Pakistan’s Choktoi Glacier maintains a 0.0% success rate on the magnificent objectives that are accessed there (Latok 3, Latok I, Latok 2, Ogre 2, Ogre I). The snowpack this year in the Karakorum was the biggest since 1976, according to the locals, which made glacier-travel easy and ridge-climbing difficult. Here is a report on the most recent Choktoi failure: Funded in part
