One of the things I love about testing out new gear is that occasionally I come across some really great items from a company that whose gear I've never used before. That's exactly the case with the new Supersoft Base Layers from Ortovox that I've had the pleasure of testing out over the past few weeks. Specifically, the Long Sleeve men's zipped top . I first got a look at the Ortovox line-up at Outdoor Retailer back in August, where I was very impressed with the design of their gear. Everything they had

Obviously I'm a big fan of the Tour de France , or I wouldn't write stage by stage recaps each day, nor pay for the All Access option so I can watch it where ever I am. Maybe that's why I got such a kick out of the t-shirts that are available from Stomach of Anger (Which is a 2010 Tour reference in and of itself). I'm particularly impressed with the shirt below, which is up for pre-order now and will ship after this year's Tour ends. It is a reference to Johnny Hoogerland, the Dutch rider who crashed into

With the main event out of the way and having recovered from the shock of Mahde's saggy Y fronts (see previous post) we had plenty of time to see a bit of Iran. We awoke in Larijan, lazy day, had a bit of a soak in the radon bath and had a tea in the town. A few of the locals became a little interested in what we'd been up to. Disbelief strewn across their faces that anyone could summit Damavand in winter. Only digital photos from the summit proving to them where we'd been quickly followed by vigorous ...

February was a tough month to be an ice climber in Canmore, especially compared to 2010. In 2010 I remember walking into climbs and working out in the back yard wearing nothing on m upper body but a T-shirt regularly. That means the high temp for the day was often above freezing. Getting in and out of the Ghost wasn't too bad in general, but this year it's been routinely impassable without chains and multiple vehicles to yank the stuck one out. We rely on chinooks in Alberta to melt out the snow with ...

A winter send of The Turning Point, V8 from Doug Lipinski on Vimeo . I'm not usually a big fan of the cold, and before this winter I'd never spent much time bouldering in sub 50 degree temperatures. As it turns out, I was missing a lot. Even here in Boulder, where January temperatures can reach the mid 60s, 35-45 degrees truly means sending temperatures. The low humidity and cold temps mean no sweaty hands and great friction, but the cold brings other challenges. With that in mind, I present an outline of

High-tech hasn't always meant “laser-cut,” sealed seams. I have a shirt that reminds me of this. It’s forest green with front buttons that’s casual but stylish enough to wear out to dinner, yet tough enough to still look good 40 years after my father bought it (and after his growing stomach passed it to me). It's time for another round of giveaways here at the Adventure Blog, and this time I've got a couple of $25 gift certificates for Adayak.com , a website that has some very cool organic t-shirts with an outdoor adventure theme, that I'm sure you're going to love. The shirts have great prints for your favorite activity, whether it's camping, climbing, hiking, or whatever, and they look equally good on the trail as they do around town. As usual, I try to make entering any contest as simple as I can, and this

The Tehipite Sanction by Rob Pizem Tehipite dome lies in the northern portion of Kings Canyon National Park, about a mile away from the Sierra National Forest boundary. But that is not where this story begins. I had planned on a summer adventure in Alaska where my partners and I would have to trek through the bush, cross icy rivers, navigate unknown glaciers, and finally end up at an enormous unclimbed big wall. We would make base camp and establish an amazing new free route on the virgin stone. ...

It's no secret that I'm a fan of gear from GoLite . They have a reputation for making excellent products that are high in quality, very durable, and light in weight. Additionally, the company has made a commitment to limit their impact on the environment which I find highly commendable as well. When I traveled to Nepal this past spring, I even took one of their sleeping bags along, and found it to be an excellent piece of kit to have while trekking in the mountains. Just before I left for my recent trip to
