It was quite wild with poor visibility during showers. Fresh snow drifing behind rocks on a rather icy Aonach Mor Plateau. From what we could see there was a fair bit of fresh being deposited on high Easterly aspects.

Arrived back from the Alps on Friday, we didn't get a route in on the last couple of days as it was raining in Switzerland. Back here the forecast was pretty similar. Today we dodged the showers at Tremadog. We managed to avoid the rain all day only getting caught by a small passing shower. This was Grahams 2nd climbing day in Wales so I wanted to take him somewhere different. Firstly I led him up The Plumb (E1 5b) in one long pitch, a fantastic pitch with interest all the way up. Then we headed to the ...

The 6 Day Mountaineering Course with instructors Josh Hosechen and Matt Montsvon has returned to Talkeetna from the Matanuska Glacier. They were unable to fly into the Alaska Range at the start of their course so they chose to drive to the Matanuska Glacier in the Chugach Mountains for glacier camping, course work, crampon travel and technical skills. They returned this afternoon ready to hit the showers! They all had a great time and learned alot with Josh and Matt, 2 super leaders and teachers. We look

After several weeks of hiking into Evans Area A, I was getting the approach dialed but getting less and less climbing actually done as the temperatures on the Front Range crept higher. The webcam at RMNP seemed to show that the snow was beginning to recede in earnest so I began heading to the Park instead. The snow was mostly gone where it mattered but a huge mini-glacier obscured most of the boulders east of the Gobot sector. Thus the Warm-up Boulders, The Centaur Boulder, Bush Pilot and European Human

Todd Passey and Todd Tumolo's team are in the back taking off their mountaineering boots and eating watermelon. They are super psyched to be back in the warmth and green. I could only take a few pics before the smell of those boots drove me back to the office. They're on their way to the Talkeetna Roadhouse for lots of food....not even taking a shower first! Oh, I pity the folks sitting next to them. Well Done! blogger Laura

This past weekend we took Dave's advice ( @BlueFoxCA ) and braved the rainy forecast for a belated Mother's Day trip to the Gunks. The trip was a lesson to us with regard to future trip planning. Some of the lessons were logistical and others were things we KNOW but don't always follow. Here's the trip report with the good, the bad, and the ugly. All in all, it's truly a reminder that a bad day of climbing is still better than a day of no climbing at all! We left central PA around 5:30 pm and drove the ...

What is "appropriate" risk? I've been thinking about this question a lot lately as I read other blog posts about risk taking for the adventurous adult (example, Amy Christensen's Expand Outdoors ). Adults in general, and parents specifically, are constantly evaluating risk as it relates to themselves and their children. Getting in a car, going to an amusement park, and even buying groceries (organic), require parents to determine risk and reward before making a choice. When we start to plan a family ...

Fresh snow on Sgurr a’ Mhaim yesterday As predicted the west of Scotland deluge has been pounding Glen Nevis. Cubby and I squinted out of the car window just long enough for an eyeful of rain and sleet and sacked it off. But on the way home the end of the first front arrived, so I hung back and read my book for a bit and then walked in. Unbelievably the severe gales had seemingly blown a lot of the rain over the top of the crag and my project was mostly dry. As the sun came out I felt good and started

Today is World Water Day, and no, that doesnt mean you should be using more of it. Skip the shower, pilgrim, and pretend youre in the backcountry. You know, just like yesterday.
For every pair of footwear it sells this year, Teva will kick in cash to protect one linear foot of waterways, which works [...]
