It all started, I believe, when I decided to buy a twenty-pound propane cylinder to use for a Mr. Heater unit in the cabin and for cooking fuel while on this southwest tour. Back in October, I went to the Agway in New Paltz and they had only one unit left. I bought it, slightly upset at the price, which was something like $25. Unfilled. When I got the cylinder home, the first night I hooked it up to the Mr. Heater and could not make it work. Not a good omen. A few days later I called the company, assuming

Despite my dark, and never mentioned aloud, concerns, the van made it to Joshua Tree. I rolled into one of the primo sites in Hidden Valley Campground last night about nine pm. Not without drama, of course. But each epic was a “Terrie-type” one; that is to say – no true inconvenience was involved. The first on-the-road problem arose just after I left from my family visit in Wisconsin, where I enjoyed leisurely days of lounging on my sister's couches while the wretched Wisconsin winter taunted me ...

Posted By Steve Mc Clure the 2010-09-01 Picture - Ivo Ninov - Five Ten The Nordic countries are awesome, and the people are always super nice. This year Ill be in Denmark twice and Norway twice, mainly for work, but way back in February I was invited to take part in the Norwegian Rock Masters Competition. So my level of psyche has varied a lot! Of course I was keen, its Norway , itll be great, but hang on, the wads are going, and anyway I hate comps, maybe not for me!! But its on real rock and ...

Lots of high-altitude hiking this week. After doing Gang Bang Arete, I decided a change of scenery was in order. Unfortunately Boulder got rained out on Wednesday so it was off to the Spot and a good session there, doing more 5-spots in one session than I have done for a while. I felt reasonably rested by Friday so this time I headed up to Upper Chaos. I really wanted to look at Barbed Wire Beard and Golden Rows of Flows and get a better look around up there. After an epic boulder-hopping hike with two ...

After a month or more of reading about everyone else having fun up in Scotland I finally managed to get up there myself. A great day out with young hotshot Greg Boswell, and nice to end the season on a high note rather than watch the season fade away. We knew we'd need to head high for conditions, and it doesn't get higher than Indicator Wall. I had my eye on Ship of Fools a route established by Iain Small and Simon Richardson in 2007. Greg starting up Pitch 1 I'd been intrigued by this route ever since I

Hi Everyone - While Sara's in Nepal, she's asked a few of us to post on her site about our latest adventures, as well as post updates from Nepal as we get them. Here's our first guest post from Aleya. Enjoy! - RCG HQ Fear Today I am exhausted. My back and knees hurt and my eyes are puffy from lack of sleep, but it’s worth it. Yesterday I had an adventure. I got to climb six pitches on Seneca Rocks in WV, tackling four different named climbs, a summit scramble, one rap to the base and a steeeeep walk out.

I woke to find a slightly damp ground that had obviously been drying for a few hours, which filled me with hope that the forecast rain had come and passed. Just like winter lift passes; I had the option of buying a full day or afternoon ticket. I figured I would make around 4 or 5 runs before getting too tired so waited until just after midday to leave the house. Whilst getting ready, I ummmd and aahhhd about what protection I should take, and was very undecided about wearing my Alpine Stars Protection ...

It's been a funny week. I've been alternating between the highs of meeting fantastic folks in the climbing community and outdoor biz since I've been actively trying to get out of my shell and build those relationships, and the lows of discouraging or frustrating experiences related to some of those efforts. I prefer to focus on the positive, but if this sounds a wee bit down, it's just 'cause this week hasn't been all highs. And, did I mention, the weather report for the weekend -- pretty much everywhere

I guess this is an unexpected trip report Part Two ( click here for Part One with more details ), thanks to KT (aka, K-dizzle) who just posted her pictures from the trip on Facebook. She shot some of them, Shawn shot others... so sorry I can't provide detailed photo credits. But, I think once you start scrolling down, you won't care about photo credits since your eyes will be watering over just how beautiful this place is. Mine are, and, over how lucky I am to get to spend some time there once in awhile...

To quote the great Yogi Berra it's "like deja vu all over again". While reading Alan Arnette's Everest 2009 page , I came across his link to this story over at the Telegraph that reports that China has shut down all foreign access to Tibet once again this year. The article says that on Wednesday, the Chinese Tourism Ministry contacted tourist agencies who were booking travel to Tibet and told them to cancel trips "for the foreseeable future". One tour operator is quoted as saying that he expects the ban on
