Whiteout conditions above 700m

The cloud level was low today so here is a view as we peered out through the clouds of the ski area and Loch Morlich White out at 1000m, drifting snow built up to 3cm within half an hour.


Variability

It was cold day on Aonach M or with summit temperatures of around -9C and a bitter Easterly wind. The older snowpack is very hard and icy (and probably providing some good climbing conditions), with a patchy cover of soft windslab . I took a wee ski tour from the top of the ski area to the actual summit of Aonach Mor and back along the top of the West face. Sunshine with light winds

A great day in the Cairngorms today, with blue skies and light winds. The ski area was very busy but it was fairly quiet in the Northern Corries. Walking conditions are pretty hard going though unless snow shoes or ski's are used. Heavy snow forecast for tomorrow, see the high cirrus clouds moving in... The snowstorm has passed

An impressive amount of snow fell during the whole of Thursday night and Friday leaving a blanket of deep soft snow at all levels. In the forest deep holes have developed around some of the trees and without ski's or snowshoes its waist deep in places. Views in and around the ski area on Cairngorm.


Another pea soup day

Unfortunately no views again today, but we could hear some voices from the ski area below the Chais Headwall where we dug our pit. Here's my mountaineering assistant Patrick happy in his work despite the weather.


Pictures from today

The cuckoo hut at the top of the ski area was looking quite frosted today. Climbers at the top of Left Twin. As can been seen the top of many routes are quite corniced at the moment. However, there is often a break in the cornice just beyond where the figure are that can allows an easy way to top out from Left Twin and many of the routes on Central Buttress.
