Today was the last day of the Walking Group Leader Training run at Plas y Brenin. Over the 3 days Helen and I covered all aspects of the syllabus through classroom and practical based activities. We headed up above Penmaenmawr on the first day, looking at navigation, leadership skills and group management. The second day we looked at hazard awareness, new navigation techniques and more consolidation of the previous day. Tuesday evening we went out night naving out the back of Capel Curig just after I was

After quite an action packed day yesterday, Blair and I opted for a slightly later start and also somewhere without an hour drive! The slate was the only option! I have been wanting to do The Mau Mau (E4 6a) for quite a while so Blair was happy to hold my ropes. I warmed up on German Schoolgirl (E2 5c), a super route with only one hard section at the start (easy if your tall). Then Blair had a few goes on True Clip (7b+) and was making some good progress. After he had a few goes we headed round the corner

Posted By Steve Mc Clure the 2011-05-30 The Quarry Man This route is the stuff of legends! And climbed by the legend Johnny Dawes. Blasted into fame in the film Stone Monkey with a Zappa sound track that elevated the route above every other in the quarries. Even the simple name blatantly indicates that this isnt just another slab or wall. This is THE masterpiece, climbing out from the biggest hole via the biggest challenges. Ive wanted to try it for years, but its not something to casually walk up

I am leaving the UK tomorrow, barring any complications from volcanic ash, and since the world has not ended, it is back to life in Colorado in a short while. The Welsh portion of the trip finished with a day on the slate quarries and an early run/hike up Mount Snowdon before heading to Sheffield. Slate is a very interesting surface/medium on which to climb as it looks very steep and difficult from below yet upon actually climbing you discover that typically the angle is 80 degrees and many small sharp ...

Hi Mark and Glyn, it was great meeting you last week, and thanks for catching me and placing my cam for me! It was an awesome route, not sure if I would have gotten on it again if I had to climb the first part for real :)

Hi Mark, Great photos from Vivan in your last post. I'm looking forward to tackling Truffle Hunter's Roof! It was me who caught the girl who fell of the Dervish. I was climbing with Luke and hosting for the BMC international meet. Good work placing the cam for her, she really enjoyed the route. Here's my account of climbing Barni's route Dwarf Shortage, I'v not climbed the bottom pitch of Central Sadness but I'v heard that its bolder than Barni's route. ...

After one of the wettest nights in a long time, the rain was literally biuncing of the house and windows in the early hours of the morning. Then when I peeled myself off the bed and went out into the world a dark, dank mizzly day was what greeted me. I was so convinced about [...]
