More development on the Ibex Wall at Never Never land in the slate quarries. Torquil Bennett has added Monkey-Bar Kid M6+ to the left of The Deerhunter.
“At around is M6+, Monkey-Bar Kid is the warm-up that both Ibex and Deerhunter were intended to be. The Deerhunter (M7?) is a pumpy route with a great crux [...]

With the arrival of the first significant cold period, and the peaks turning whiter with each passing day – yes, winter is (almost) here. What better way to get in the mood for some tricky mixed climbing than a dry tooling session in the slate quarries.
As luck would have it Torquil Bennett has added a [...]

Today's climbing was ruled out by the constant rain which had spread over North Wales. So instead John and I went for an adventure in the slate quarries. We had heard about a journey called Snakes and Ladders by various folk. Its given HVS but the climbing is never difficult. The scary bits are climbing up the ancient ladders and moving over loose slate and rubble. The route goes through all of the main climbing areas, through tunnels, up ladders, down steep rock. I did feel a little short changed as there

I have been climbing primarily in Five Ten shoes for the past five or more years, being converted instantly by the properties of the now-extinct V10. For my money, the Dragon is one of the very best bouldering shoes ever made. Recently Five Ten sent me a pair of their new trail-running shoe, The Dome, to try out. I put the shoes through their paces this spring and into the summer, beginning pretty much out of the box in North Wales. I wore these shoes on everything from the approach to Rainbow Slab in the

Ian Lloyd-Jones continues to produce new sport routes in the slate quarries. His latest addition is Slabaholics Anonymous F7a+, the central line on the Gorbals Slab, to the right of The Gorbals itself.
“It’s a good slab climb with a thin (think finger nails) crux at the top. Im sort of hoping this one wont make [...]

I am leaving the UK tomorrow, barring any complications from volcanic ash, and since the world has not ended, it is back to life in Colorado in a short while. The Welsh portion of the trip finished with a day on the slate quarries and an early run/hike up Mount Snowdon before heading to Sheffield. Slate is a very interesting surface/medium on which to climb as it looks very steep and difficult from below yet upon actually climbing you discover that typically the angle is 80 degrees and many small sharp ...

Infact I have hardly had a spare moment to keep track of the routes I've been doing. Over the last month I have been sampling various different venues around North Wales, some local some more distant from Llanberis. The weather has been ideal for lots of cragging with short walk-ins, The Great and Little Orme, LLanberis Pass, Tremadog, Gogarth etc. We have also had some good spells of weather which have dried out the mountain crags such as Craig Y Ysva and areas up around Snowdon. Had a few hits up in the

Last night I was running a training session for the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, the general aim was to familiarize them with the complex layout of the Slate Quarries, so should we have to rescue a walker, mountain biker, climber or paraglider, then we should be able to respond with lightning efficiency.
The train was thrown [...]

In this series of four posts I want to give you some background and a sneak preview of each of the four films on Hot Aches Productions’ new DVD ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’ or ‘MSMD’ as the kids call it. Hazel Findlay on the MSMD disc artwork. Photo by Adrian Trendall, design by Ifan Bates. MSMD Part 1 – ‘Slate Monkeys’ I was very fortunate to get this footage, it wasn’t exactly a planned shoot. Matt Segal was on a four-week climbing trip to the UK and although I had planned to catch up with
