The Grandes Jorasses

The most renowned north face of the Alps is the Grandes Jorasses. The route is exciting: climbing Desmaison with one bivouac at the start and one at mid height. Since early fall, my sights were set on its summit. Jonathan Griffith, a photographer and friend, suggested we try the Grandes Jorasses with Andy Houseman, an English climber, and use the opportunity to get some interesting pictures of the route. Good idea! Sadly, our start was poor. Andy arrived from England and I was coming from Nice; no time to

Sunset on the edge of the Lake District

Image from Google Living on the edge of the hills my focus is often south towards the likes of Grasmoor and the Buttermere valley or the hulking girt frame of Skiddaw. But facing westward means that every so often the skies refuse to...

Matt's guest blog - First few days on Hoy

Hi, I'm Matt Pycroft and I'm working on the Hoy shoot as a cameraman. I've put a quick post together to show you what's been going on since we arrived on the island. Well the first few days on Hoy have been pretty exciting. The ‘ME cottage’ we are staying in is really swish, and is by no means the rundown bothy I was expecting. 'ME Cottage' After arriving on Thursday night we packed our bags and grabbed a few hours sleep before heading out towards the crag on Friday morning. Between us we have a huge

Ripping the Flake for Arcteryx

Image from Google By Will Stanhope Two months ago I ripped off the flake on Parthian Shot, at Burbage South in the Peak District. Tim Emmett, trusted friend and well-known British climber, belayed me, and eventually piggy-backed me down the trail. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand that evening- I really do appreciate it. I had spent a few days on the gritstone previously and was eager to try a real 'hard grit' line. And Parthian didn't disappoint. Incredible movement on a wild prow, very physical and delicate at the same

Back From The Atacama!

Image from Google Hey Folks! Wanted to start the day off with a note that I'm back from Chile's Atacama Desert and will be getting back to regular updates later today. I had a fantastic time there, and will be sharing plenty of stories and photos very soon. Suffice as to say, it is one of the most diverse, and beautiful, places I've ever visited, and quite the outdoor playground for adventure lovers. I know that Patagonia gets most of the love in terms of Chile's wonderful places, but if you're looking for another ...

Iran and success on Mt Damavand

I'm looking through the door in the basement of a hotel where I'm lying, with 4 other men, in a radon bath heated by the geothermal springs of Mt Damavand. Stood in the doorway is an overweight Iranian taxi driver in white baggy white Y fronts with a big rubber tube in his hand. Even after only a few days in Iran we were getting rapidly used to these contrasts but only a few hours ago it had been -25℃ and blowing about 40km/h as we clipped into our skis, 100m below the summit of Mt Damavand, the highest
