Yoga climbing, by Stevie novice Haston.

Image from Google The Yoga breathing is working for the climbing, but its not working so well for my swimming, phooee! The problem with my climbing now is that I am relatively weak. The Yoga has worked because it has maximised my potential at this level of strength, but I cant do any better. In fact I think I am really lucky to have squeezed out my last few ascents. So in truth it’s back to some basic training because I lack the ability to do a long sustained sequence, or a hard powerful pull, or two. In my underwater ...

My first day of winter

Image from Google Today was the test to see if I have eaten too many cakes over the summer! On the walk in to the North Face of Ben Nevis, I was starting to think that I had. I just couldn't keep my knees above the snow. After 'swimming' up to the CIC hut, I realised that its not my 'winter weight' that was the problem but the vast amounts of snow up there. Kenny and I swam up to Fat Boy Slim (VI,6) on Secondary Tower Ridge hoping we would find tracks from Blair and Dave the day before. Unfortunately there were none! We did

Adventure Time part 1

Image from Google Having managed to get a precious slot of free time I'd hoped to go to the Alps but somehow despite planning 4 months in advance I failed to convince anyone to commit to a climb with me! But never fear there are adventures aplenty within our own shores. So I'm halfway through a two-part 'UK choss -o dyssey'. For Part One I linked up with my fellow Climb editor Dave Pickford. First for a 1000ft plus traverse of Avon Gorge's main wall. The Equator is a 12 pitch historical classic which we managed in 7 ...

Running stuff, ‘Three swift lads’, by Stevie Haston.

Just chatting about running sometimes seems to be running. Anyway ain't done much jogging, slow shuffling, or running but keep thinking about it, which isn’t the same either. I am a bit crook, have a gammy abductor which I have made worse by climbing at my favourite crag. I have in fact worked with my injury, doing building work, run up my hill, gone swimming and diving, caving too, and they all hurt. Cycling is ok which shows you the value of having a pushbike. Anyway was thinking about three of my ...

2 Wet Days off

Image from Google This weekend was a complete wash out, so much rain! Fortunatly Dan wanted to take me down a river, he had his work cut out! We went to the Tryweryn which is a dam released river. We put in at the top where Dan taught me some skills, we realised I had several bad habits! We headed down stream but got out and walked around some the upper grade 4 section. We then did the whole lower section which has a spicy Grade 4 section which I did without swimming. The next day we went back and I paddled the whole of the

ESPN Profiles World Tri-Athlete Charlie Wittmack

Image from Google Remember Charlie Wittmack? He was the guy we were following since last summer when he set out on his World Tri , an expedition that included a swim across the English Channel, a bike-ride across Europe and Asia, and a climb to the summit of Everest. I wrote about his progress a few times along the way, but after he was struck by a car in Kazakhstan , and returned home for a bit, it was difficult to get updates on his progress. The last I had heard, he had returned to Nepal and was on his way to Everest ,

Elk-Beaver Ultra - Canadian 50 Mile championship

In 2001, with about 6 months left in my degree, I dropped out of university, packed all my belongings into a duffel bag and a bike box, left my girlfriend behind and flew across the country to pursue my Olympic dream with the National Triathlon Centre in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. I arrived with two of my training partners from Kingston, Ontario on a cold and rainy January night with no place to stay and no real plans about how I was going to make it work. We were met at the airport by Simon ...

Catlin Arctic Survey 2011: Heading Home!

Image from Google The 2011 Arctic Season, what little there was of it, is quickly grinding to a halt, as the Barneo Ice Station closes for another year, and several l ast minute expeditions had to be scrubbed . As anyone who follows these polar adventures know, this was a particularly strange and challenging year, with no one making the full journey to the North Pole. But the severe, and at times odd, weather conditions didn't prevent the Catlin Arctic Survey teams from doing their job for a third straight year. For the ...

Croatian Adventurer Sends Welcome Message To The World

Image from Google This is a fun story I shared over at Gadling today, but wanted to post about it here as well. An outdoor enthusiast from Croatia has embarked on an ambitious project which he hopes will send a gigantic "welcome" to the rest of the world from his home country. On Tuesday of this week, Daniel Lacko set out on a pre-set course that will take him through some wild Croatian backcountry on foot, kayak, and bike. The journey will cover more than 2500km (1553 miles) and will pass througheight national parks, three

The Most Treacherous Part of Any Reindeer Migration Is…the Swim

A year or so ago, I was huddled in a stone hut well above the Arctic Circle in traditional Sami reindeer lands. It was after midnight and a cold rain splattered the fogged window while a herder cooked our dinner over open flame — salmon hed caught that morning in the fjord far below us. [...]
