Two famous Sherpa mountain guides are preparing to embark on another epic adventure in mid-January, when they set off to hike the entire length of the 1700km (1056 mile) Great Himalayan Trail . Starting on January 15th, Apa Sherpa and Dawa Steven Sherpa will begin the trek , which is expected to take roughly 120 days to complete. Touted as the highest altitude long distance trail in the world, the GHT isn't likely to pose much of a problem for these two men. Apa has reached the summit of Everest an ...

One of my favorite podcasts of all time came off an extended hiatus last week, when The Rest of Everest Episode 152 was released at last. The show has long been a fantastic, and very in depth, look at not only climbing Everest, but also trekking in Nepal and other sections of the Himalaya. This latest episode begins where we left off months ago, when a team of trekkers headed to Lhasa in Tibet to prepare for their Himalayan adventure. As the episode opens, we're reminded that the altitude gain from ...

Climber Alan Arnette knocked off another one of the Seven Summits today, reaching the "Roof of Africa" on Kilimanjaro. This is his fifth successful summit as he continues his efforts to raise funds, and awareness , of Alzheimer's Disease . Earlier today Alan sent an audio dispatch from the top of Kili, where he reported spectacular views and clear skies overlooking the African savannah below. Since Kilimanjaro is the tallest free standing mountain in the world, at 5894 meters (19,340 feet), summiteers can

Two trekkers, AustralianGreg Babbage and Brit Toni Wilson, have walked their way into the record books by becoming the first people to hike the length of the Great Himalaya Trail in Nepal end-to-end in a single season. The pair began their walk back in February and finished up just a few days ago, covering more than 1700km (1056 miles) in the process. You can read all about Greg and Toni's adventure on TrekTheGreatHimalayaTrail.com , which is where they posted updates about their journey over the past few

Last fall a lot was made about Everest gaining 3G cell phone service , at least in Base Camp. The word was that cell tower was installed in the area, and we were promised all kinds of faster connections for data and voice. It all sounded good in theory, but it seems that in practice it isn't quite living up to how it was billed. In one of his early dispatches on the trek to BC, Dave Hahn noted that the service was sketchy, even down in the Khumbu Valley. Today, Explorers Web has an interesting post on the

The climbing hasn't exactly begun yet, but the climbers in the Himalaya are on the move. There have been a number of reports indicating that the weather has cleared, at least for now, and flights to Lukla are on schedule. Well, on schedule by Nepali terms anyway. Arriving in Lukla is the first stage of the climb, even if it is still quite a long way from the mountain. From there, the climbers will actually descend a short distance for the first day, before making the long climb up to Namche Bazaar and ...

It hardly seems possible that we're on the verge of another Everest climbing season, but a month from now the climbers will be hurriedly putting the final touches on their preparations before setting off to the Himalaya. One of those climbers will be Alan Arnette , who is already preparing for his own attempt on the mountain and has shared some pre-season information with us on his latest blog post . First off, Alan reports that he has heard from the good folks at Everest ER , who will once again be ...

A cold start, with all of our water bottles partly frozen and ice covering the window. "What kind of nutters," asked Lise, pacing around the dining room to keep warm, "come to the Himalayas in January? I mean, seriously..." "Seemed like a good idea at the time...." I shuddered. "You know it's minus four in here?" The wall thermometer said as much. "Well according to my watch it's a nice balmy 14 degrees" My watch - a snazzy Suunto job with compass, gps, altimeter, barometer and all the works, was great at

A few days back I received an e-mail that introduced me to a website that I didn't even know existed, and after spending some time checking it out, I wanted to share the link with you as well. The site is ClimbForChange.com which has been designed to be an online meeting place for mountaineers and trekkers who are hoping to make a difference in the world through their adventurous endeavors. The site offers some great info for people like us who not only live their own adventures but also enjoy following

My favorite video podcast returned with a new episode yesterday, as the Rest of Everest continues showing us every aspect of not only climbing that mountain, but also trekking through the Khumbu region as well. Episode 144 is entitled "The Gates to Paradise." It marks the end of the trekking portion of the 2009 trip, which was also a workshop for both photography and videography. The last leg of the journey offers scenery that is as spectacular as the others, with the High Himalaya dominating the horizon,
