Gear Box: New Balance 360 Degree Running Jacket

Image from Google With the summer now long over, and cooler weather settling in, runners are digging deep into their closet to pull out their warmer gear. A recent cool front has brought some much needed, and appreciated, fall weather to my neighborhood, which has made longer runs much more bearable and served as a perfect testing ground for a new running jacket from New Balance . The 360 Degree Jacket was designed to remove any excuses for not going for a run due to inclement weather. It is both wind and water resistant,

Kalymnos 2011 - Trip Report 4 (Grande Grotta and Arhi)

Hey y'all! Let's get into the pics. Day five of climbing was in the mighty Grande Grotta and surrounds. This massive cave is the most famous sector on the island. Kurt's been experimenting with the GoPro capturing footage while climbing. I've often thought of headcam shots as "vomit footage" because the camera is swinging around wildly, but he's captured a few cool short grabs which I will certainly try to get into the trip video. This is a newish route in the Grande Grotta called Happy Girlfriend. It ...

Cerro Torre Trip Report

Image from Google Sweating hard, I took another step and plunged boot-deep in the soft snow. The rope pulled sharply at my harness. “You need to slow down dude, I can’t go as fast as you,” Chris urged. He was right; we were gaining nothing by working this hard on the approach. It was 11:00 am, the sun, a rare-sight in this mountain range, was shining brightly down on us. The snow was isothermal. The mighty east face of Cerro Torre leered above, taunting me. This was the culmination of a season spent biding time, ...

Expedition Behaviour: The Finer Points

I found this the other day and thought it applied well to our Broad Peak trip. We'd already agreed as a team that $20 is going into the DEC fund for every time somebody has a row but maybe it should be extended to breaking the rules... Original Credit, Howard Tomb: http://recparks.asp.radford.edu/faculty/behavior.htm Expedition Behavior The Finer Points Howard Tomb A good expedition team is like a powerful, well-oiled, finely tuned marriage. Members cook meals together, carry burdens together, face ...

Steall sessions

Image from Google First ascent of The Fat Groove 8a, Steall Two good sessions at Steall with Tweedley and Boswell. On day one I mostly put in bolts and scrubbed and was knackered. Net day, after baby class it was time to get actually climbing. I equipped a big diagonal groove cutting across my route Stolen and Running into the last part of Trick of the Tail (which is now bolted to the niche below the perma-wetness with permission from Mark at great 7b+). Being a groove I figured some bridging would be possible, which it was

Tricks of the Trade...

The life of a climber is often not as glamorous as people think. Travelling the world can be tough, waking up every day in a beautiful place, with fresh air and great friends quickly gets old, and the well defined physique we get without any real effort is not as magnetic to the opposite sex as you have been lead to believe... Ok, ok, so the life of a climber is actually pretty cool, and we are essentially gods amongst mortals. But there is one down side - we are naturally stingy with our hard earned cash.

If you see Spiderman. . .

Image from Google If you happen to be at the climbing gym and you see a 3 year old Spiderman hanging around, it's possiblethat you've come across my son. He's a bit hard to track down as we tend to take the kids to the gym on days and times when there are fewer climbers around. We especially avoid the young/single social group that tends to crowd the gym on a typical Tuesday or Thursday night. Still, it was Tuesday this week before we could get in our weekly climbing trip to the gym. Rather than miss the week completely, we
