Death and Transfiguration, a goodbye to two hill men, by Stevie Haston?

Two people who were members of the outdoor community died recently, and somehow have left a deeper hole in me than seems possible. In future I will try to keep up on this and publish something, nothing too personal, just a polite death notice. We are all freightened of death, but dying while doing your sport might be an appropriate way to go, as happened to the two individuals in question. The mountains are dangerous and our lives are precarious, and none of us can escape death. But, and for me it is a ...

Century crack three, by Stevie Haston.

Image from Google So here’s a photo of a young climber being greedy and making a mess! Two people came onto my Blog last night from Iraq, and I was just wondering whom you were. A lot of people come onto my blog and don’t get it, and when they cant find the stupidity they seek, they don’t come again. That’s no loss to me. Some people come to my Blog and actually read, and gain something, which is a bit of plus. There are an estimated 4.5 million orphans in Iraq! The two blips out of the air-waves from Iraq, I guess

1st Malta Bouldering Competition by Stevie Haston Photos By RONALD BALZAN

SECRETARY OF SPORT MR PULI AND SIMON ALDEN Bouldering comps are not my bag, but this Maltese meeting of climbers who used a comp as an excuse to pass a friendly day trying hard on some great stone, was very sweet. The Malta Climbing Club organized the event or happening with the support of some generous local sponsors and kind volunteers, they all need a big thank you but I think they know already. The event was held at Wied Hasan a very attractive wave of colourful rock just above a deep water soloing ...

A day for Avalanches

After last night's stormy weather and all of the avalanche activity it turned into a pleasant day. There have been several natural and human triggered avalanches today in the Chais headwall area and Northern Corries. This photo is of a triggered avalanche below the Fiacaill Buttress with an unpleasent run out through the rocks. The large crown wall at the top of the Goat Track. The debris from the triggered avalanche on the goat track this morning. Two people were carried down.

Scottish Winter 2011

Image from Google Photos courtesy of Zac Poulton, James Morrison and Mark Scales Scottish winter kit So having just returned from my first Scottish winter, I thought now would be a good time to share the experience. It’s hard to know where to start, as packing my bags for the trip seems a lifetime ago. I guess a good place is in fact the packing. So having seen the kit list from AP, and confident I had most of the kit; I set about the challenge of packing all the kit into two bags. This went strangely to plan, and left me

Paul Robinson hangboard workout

American Paul Robinson is one of the world's best boulderers right now being only one of two people to have climbed proposed V16, and he's posted up on his blog one of his typical hangboard workouts. Obviously this is going to be more advanced that most people can handle, but it might give you a few ideas on exercises you can perform on the board. Have fun, and watch those elbows! P-Rob's Workout A few people have inquired about what I do on the hang board for my workouts. It pretty simple considering ...

Walking The Amazon Update: Not Done Yet, Not Getting Any Easier

Image from Google It has been awhile since we checked in with Ed Stafford and Cho Sanchez on their Walking the Amazon Expedition , but as they get closer to the end of the journey, I thought that it was time for a bit of an update. As you probably remember, the two men are attempting to become the first to ever hike the length of the Amazon River, with Ed getting things started a few years back, and Cho joining him a bit later on. They've now been in the field a total of 834 days, and they are hoping to finish up sometime

Everest Base Camp Trek: Preparing For The Trail

Image from Google Today's edition of my "Himalayan High" series over at Gadling focuses on physically preparing for the trek to Everest Base Camp . It is my philosophy that in order to get the most out of a trip of this kind, you need to be as prepared as possible ahead of time. I don't want to not enjoy myself while on the journey because I'm miserable and struggling to make the hike. With that in mind, I put together some ideas on how to prepare if you want to make the journey for yourself. As I stated in the Gadling ...
