Whiteout conditions above 700m

The cloud level was low today so here is a view as we peered out through the clouds of the ski area and Loch Morlich White out at 1000m, drifting snow built up to 3cm within half an hour.

January 2012

Image from Google Welcome to the long dark days of winter. The snow finally melted off here in Boulder and bouldering outside is once more an option. Not that I have been doing much of that. A couple of weeks off due to weather and various illnesses and suddenly my Christmas break was over. Before Christmas, I felt as though my training was going quite well and now I am trying to recover that standard, little by little. I have very nice simple but effective training set-up in my basement which has been very helpful in ...

The Rest of Everest Returns From Hiatus!

Image from Google One of my favorite podcasts of all time came off an extended hiatus last week, when The Rest of Everest Episode 152 was released at last. The show has long been a fantastic, and very in depth, look at not only climbing Everest, but also trekking in Nepal and other sections of the Himalaya. This latest episode begins where we left off months ago, when a team of trekkers headed to Lhasa in Tibet to prepare for their Himalayan adventure. As the episode opens, we're reminded that the altitude gain from ...

Baruntse & Mera Peak Expedition 2011 Part 3

Image from Google The Amphu Lapcha A quick and cold fair well was given to Baruntse base camp as we got underway for Chukhung. This was expected to be a 12 hour day which would be a shock to the system after trekking for 6 hours at most on the walk in. Walking most of the way with Debbie and Gordon, we all doubted our ability to get over the Amphu Lapcha; however the prospect of failing wasn’t too great as the Amphu Lapcha was the only reasonable way out of the valley other than a helicopter… our time would come for ...

Lovely conditions in the Cairngorms today, very cold light winds and sunny. Views looking across SE side of Cairngorm.

Marin Roller Coaster

I'm sitting naked in the front seat of my car, it's dark outside and I can hear the rain rasping at the roof of the vehicle. The car smells musky and the heater is blasting my exposed skin with warm canned air. I look over at the mound of muddy shoes littering the passenger side foot cavity of the car, assessing my quiver and the state of my legs, trying to figure out what sort of support I feel like. My suit pants and tie are in a crumpled heap on the passenger seat. It's the main reason I buy iron free
