Slovenians Kyrgyzstan

Image from Google S lovenian climbers made the first ascent of a major summit in the Western Kokshaal-too of Kyrgyzstan this season. Pik Byeliy (5697m) was the highest unclimbed peak in the Western Kokshaal-too and has been the objective of many expeditions to the area over the past decade. The Western Kokshaal-too forms part of the Tien Shan range along the border of China and Kyrgyzstan. Americans Jerry Dodrill, Mike Libecki, Doug and Jed Workman made the first major attempt at Peak Byeliy in 2000 from the southwest ridge

The Other Side of the Mountain

Image from Google I have been very busy working on the book this past week but have squeezed a few visits in at Area A, Mount Evans. The snow has been piling up in RMNP all spring and although a few have ventured up that way, the action has clearly been at Lincoln Lake. The earlier (re)discovery of Endo Valley had primed the pump (in a manner of speaking) and the news coming from Wolvo/LL has been mostly fast repeats of last year's new problem testpieces along with the usual downgrades. Cool stuff to be sure and I look ...

Jon Griffith gives us the full report from the epic 5 day winter ascent of the Super Integral . "The Super Integral heads up the same impressive ridge line of the Integral but climbs a set of harder routes on the west side..."

Avalanche from the 15th

The slowly thawing snowpack is not that interesting right now. However, I made use of the day by getting some more pictures of the full depth avalanche that came down West side of Glas Maol/Creag Leacach ten days ago on the 15th (see the blog post of the 19th).

Longs peak speed ascent

Looking up at Longs Peak (center) from the Jim's Grove/Battle Mountain junction. Mt Meeker (left) and Mt Lady Washington (right) are also pictured. I've been planning on doing a fast ascent of Longs for quite a while and it finally came together last weekend. I ended up staying in Estes Park on Saturday night before getting up at 5am and heading to the trailhead with Dave. We hit the trail right at 6 and made fast progress up through the trees, quickly hitting the Jim's Grove/Battle Mountain junction. We

Spring Ski Spectacular

Image from Google Boulder-based photographer Fred Marmsater sent us this inspiring gallery of April skiing above Gothic, near Crested Butte, and on the west side of the Indian Peaks. Be sure to visit his website for more great images.

H2 Go!

Whether canoeing, kayaking, or beachcombing, spring is a great time to be by the water. Whet your palate with one of these three adventures. Suisun Sundowner Monterey and Point Reyes might get all of the kayaking fanfare, but the Suisun Estuary near Fairfield holds its own. In fact, its the biggest wildlife estuary in the lower 48 and remains largely untapped by the kayak and canoe crowd. Once a major transportation canal used by the Patwin Indian tribe, the estuarys magic was not lost on Trish Abbatiello
