The Saga of the Stove

It all started, I believe, when I decided to buy a twenty-pound propane cylinder to use for a Mr. Heater unit in the cabin and for cooking fuel while on this southwest tour. Back in October, I went to the Agway in New Paltz and they had only one unit left. I bought it, slightly upset at the price, which was something like $25. Unfilled. When I got the cylinder home, the first night I hooked it up to the Mr. Heater and could not make it work. Not a good omen. A few days later I called the company, assuming

Irresponsible

The trauma of Saturday’s efforts has put my ankle injury back a bit, so it’s no climbing for me for another wee while to give the wound a chance to knit again. Unfortunately, I think it could get in the way of finishing my big trad projects of the summer. But never say die… Who cares? At least I got through Saturday. I didn’t really tell anyone, but the whole of last week passed in a preoccupied state of worry that I wouldn’t be able to climb on the day. On the Wednesday morning I got out of bed

Tour 2010: Alps Shatter Peloton

It was a very rough day in the Alps for the riders in the 2010 Tour de France , who got their first real taste of the mountains today, when they faced a 204.5 km (127 mile) stage that wound from Morzine-Avoriaz to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, crossing over multiple mountain passes, including two Category 1 and a Beyond Category climb, in the process. The stage ended with a blistering downhill run that took skill and courage to fly to the finish line. The winner of today's stage was Sandy Casar who was part of

Tour 2010: Rest Day Reflections

Image from Google Today is the first rest day in the 2010 Tour de France , and after a tough weekend in the early mountain stages, it seems the riders can really use the break. It was certainly an eventful couple of days to say the least, as the true GC contenders took center stage yesterday, as we can now see where the battle lines will be drawn. Meanwhile, Lance Armstrong sees his last attempt at winning slip away on a brutal day for the Tour legend. On Saturday, the riders entered the first medium-mountain stage with a

Rock climbing: the sexiest sport

During my time on the road lately, I have been catching up on some reading. Continuing my quest for self-improvement reading that doesn't suck, I picked up a copy of "59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot" by Richard Wiseman . It's a great little book... quick, specific strategies for living a more happy life. When I got to the chapter on "Attraction," I was quite amused to find a study assessing the "attractiveness" of various sports and activities to members of the opposite sex. Apparently, women find

Triathlete Survives Gator Attack

A Florida man training for a triathlon was attacked by an alligator over the weekend while he was swimming in a lake near Orlando, but the reptile let him go when he started punching back. According to this story in the Palm Beach Post 35-year old Doug McCard says he felt the gator clamp its jaws across his torso while he was in the midst of his training swim, and immediately knew what was happening, and thought "I can't believe a gator is biting me." He then stood u in the waist deep water, and began ...

Adam Campbell Trans Rockies Race Report

Image from Google On the Seventh Day They Rested Click here to read the full story "There is an advantage in wisdom won from pain." Aeschylus, 5th C. B.C. The loneliness of the long distance runner is a long, overdrawn analogy. I say this because many of my most memorable running experiences include other people. I proposed to my fiancée on a run, I have heard of expected pregnancies, I have shared experiences and views…these runs and shared moments are rehashed over pints and coffees. The truth is, if I want to hang ...

2009-08-29 11:15:00

I woke to find a slightly damp ground that had obviously been drying for a few hours, which filled me with hope that the forecast rain had come and passed. Just like winter lift passes; I had the option of buying a full day or afternoon ticket. I figured I would make around 4 or 5 runs before getting too tired so waited until just after midday to leave the house. Whilst getting ready, I ummmd and aahhhd about what protection I should take, and was very undecided about wearing my Alpine Stars Protection ...
