Alaskan Killed on Denali

Image from Google B rian Young, in what marks the fifth death of the season on Denali, passed away at high camp (17,200') in the morning of June 10. Young, a 52-year-old from Kodiak, AK, had just completed a successful 20-hour push for Denali's summit and was preparing for bed when he stopped breathing. His tent mates quickly called for the aid of a nearby NPS mountaineering patrol, but Young was unable to be resuscitated. At 11:00 p.m., he was pronounced dead by a NPS volunteer physician's assistant. Due to inclement ...

Jordan Romero Has Big Plans For 2011

Image from Google Last year, Jordan Romero grabbed headlines across the globe when he became the youngest person to summit Everest at the age of 13. This year he still has some lofty goals to accomplish with a busy schedule of climbs once again. Jordan has always said that he hoped to complete the Seven Summits , and in the process become the youngest person to do so. He's 14 now and has just one peak left on the list, which is Mt. Vinson in Antarctica. He plans to make his attempt on that mountain in December of 2011, ...

Wrap Up of the Bozeman Ice Fest

Image from Google The Arc'teryx Bozeman Ice Fest is different every year, but the span of emotions from this year's festival seemed particularly representative of the sport and culture of ice climbing: in the joy of beginner climbers hefting tools for the first time and the glow of older climbers returning to Hyalite after being away; in a somber tribute to friend and mentor Guy Lacelle, who had a fatal accident in the canyon one year ago. The Bozeman Ice Fest represented a microcosm of the sport as a whole, both in its ...

CORE by Chuck Fryberger: The Full Review

Image from Google As promised, I am posting a full review of the new film CORE by Chuck Fryberge r. As I have mentioned before, I am a big fan of Chuck's work. His visual sense is extraordinary and his idea of what makes an interesting scene is uniquely his own. I thought his previous film, PURE, to be one of the best recent climbing films made, and went to the premiere of CORE with a great sense of anticipation. I was not disappointed at the Boulder Theater and upon viewing the film again several times, I am still very ...

VIDEO: Franco Cookson Headpoints New Possible E8

Young and outspoken climber Franco Cookson, who is perhaps best known for his internet ranting as opposed to his actual climbing, has made the first ascent of a bold arete at Danby Crag in the North York Moors (where else?!). Franco has graded the route H7 6c as he is a firm believer in the onsight ethic...

Crawling along

Sport climbing trips out here in Spain or France have been a staple of my yearly climbing diet for nearly ten years. I come for lots of reasons, to relax the mind (these days), to replenish the body in a less harsh climate, to enjoy the climbs here also. But mainly I come here to train. Trying to achieve a very high level of rock climbing fitness in Scotland is very like being pinned down in a game of chess - lots of potential options, but all of them blocked. We have a world class climbing facility at ...

Lacedelli, K2 Legend, Dies in Italy

Lino Lacedelli, the Italian mountaineer who made the first ascent of K2, died November 20 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, where he had lived his entire life. He was 83 years old. Lacedelli's ascent of K2 with Achille Compagnoni on July 31, 1954 and the ensuing decades-long controversy often overshadows his career as a daring rock specialist and member of the Cortina Squirrels climbing club. Born in Cortina, Italy, in the heart of the Dolomites, Lacedelli made his first climbs as a young teenager and quickly
